Mission

The mission of our M.M.Ed. distance learning program is to meet the educational and professional needs of in-service music teachers while maintaining a liberal arts focus. Through a liberal arts education, we prepare students for the needs of various learners and communities, provide support to enhance pedagogical and leadership skills, and encourage personal identity as policy-makers in music education. Students from various musical backgrounds, regions, and specialties collaborate in a true liberal arts style during most courses. This is a music education specific program in which students engage in pedagogy, history, theory, research, and performance. Throughout the M.M.Ed. distance learning program students will develop new curricula, engage in action and/or scholarly research, and develop new musical, pedagogical, or research skills that contribute to the body of knowledge and practice.

Regular Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the program leading to the Master of Music Education degree must comply with the general requirements of the University System and the University as described earlier in this catalog.  Consideration for admission will be given to applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree in music education from a regionally accredited institution or who hold certification in music education and who present evidence of probable success in graduate work. The application procedures for the Master of Music Education program are listed below.

Application Procedures

Transcripts must show a baccalaureate degree in music education from an accredited institution and present evidence of probable success in graduate work. Other bachelor degrees in music may be considered on an individual basis but additional coursework may be required. Any student who registers under this agreement must be admitted either to regular or to provisional status by the end of the first semester of enrollment in order to continue taking courses in the degree program. Students may take no more than 12 semester hours of graduate course work in conditional admission.

Academic Dismissal

If a student’s institutional grade point average remains below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student will fail to meet the requirements for progression and will be dismissed from the program.
