Liberal Studies B.A., Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Studies Concentration

Degree Requirements

A student can choose to pursue a Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Studies concentration within the Liberal Studies major at any time in her/his college career, although students are advised to declare their major early in order to ensure a timely completion of their degree program.

Additional Requirements (6 semester hours)

Two additional courses selected from any of the above areas (Humanities, Social Science, Gender, History).

Capstone (3 semester hours)

The capstone course can be fulfilled by independent study, but it must be on a project that shows the convergence between race, ethnic and gender relation.

Options for capstone:

  1. AFST 4010, the African Country Project can be used for this purpose, provided it is not already used under the Social Science category and the student shows the convergence in the country studied of race, ethnic, and gender relations.
  2. WMST 4xxx: An appropriate 4000-level Women's Studies course.
  3. IDST 4999: An appropriate Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone.
  4. Appropriate Study Abroad course taken in consultation with the advisor.
  5. Student can petition the Liberal Studies coordinator to allow an upper level AFST, BLST, or WMST course as a capstone course for this track.

Electives (3-12 semester hours)

Electives will vary by student because of various credits needed for foreign language requirement.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students must demonstrate minimum proficiency at the level of the fourth university course (2002) in one foreign language.

Other Requirements for Liberal Studies B.A. (all concentrations)

  • Completion of the First-Year Academic Seminar with a passing grade. Students who transfer to GC after the first term are exempt from the requirement.
  • Liberal Studies majors must earn a C or better in all courses that count toward their major.
  • A minimum of 120 semester credit hours and all requirements met. 
  • A minimum of 39 semester hours overall must be at the 3000-4000 level.
  • Fulfillment of University-wide Senior Capstone Experience requirement, as explained above.
