Mission

The mission of the Master of Music Education, as guided by the Department of Music at Georgia College, is to provide a complete music education through a competency based academic and artistic curriculum. The Master of Music Education degree will allow students to continue to develop as musicians and to expand and extend the study of the musical development of children and adolescents at an advanced level. The continuing education beyond the bachelor's level will give certified in-service and pre-service teachers the tools to add a dimension to student's lives found only through the arts.

Regular Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the program leading to the Master of Music Education degree must comply with the general requirements of the University System and the University as described earlier in this catalog. Consideration for admission will be given to applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree in music education from a regionally accredited institution and who present evidence of probable success in graduate work. Other bachelor degrees in music can be considered on an individual basis but additional coursework may be required. The application procedures for the Master of Music Education program are listed below.

Application Procedures

1. GC Graduate Application http://www.gcsu.edu/admissions/graduate
2. Transcript(s): One official copy of all transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office at the time of application or at least eight weeks prior to the admission deadline. Transcripts must show a baccalaureate degree in music education from an accredited institution and present evidence of probable success in graduate work. Other bachelor degrees in music may be considered on an individual basis but additional coursework may be required. Any application with lower than a 2.5 GPA in music courses may gain provisional admission and once they earn at least a 3.0 GPA their first semester (nor more than 12 hours), they will be moved to regular admission status.
3. Recommendations: Three recommendations are required from persons outside the university who have knowledge of the candidate's ability to work with children and adolescents and/or potential as a graduate student (form is available at this Web site http://www.gcsu.edu/admissions/graduate)
4. Resume/Curriculum Vita: A brief account of your education, experience (administrative, teaching, teaching-related, include any experience working with children), other work experience, activities/skills, etc.
5. 500 Word Applicant Statement: This statement should include your objectives and frank observations of your professional and personal strengths and weaknesses, and any significant professional experiences or honors, and any other information you think important.

   2. What do you hope to get out of the experience?
   3. What significant professional experiences or achievements have you had?
   4. What areas do you wish to further explore?
   5. What areas will you focus on for skills development or improvement?
   6. Is there anything else you wish to share?
6. Test Scores: choose one or more of the following to submit.
   1. Summary from Georgia PSC website showing passing scores on Music section for valid Georgia teaching certificate.
   2. GACE II or Praxis II Music test scores or any music specific tests for certification.
   3. GRE scores: For all applicants, there is no minimum required combined score but it is recommended that the combined GRE score (i.e. the Verbal section score plus the Quantitative section score) be above 1000.
   4. If any music test scores are more than 10 years old, the applicant must take a Music Theory Diagnostic exam.
7. Submission of a video-recorded lesson or rehearsal with written lesson plan (minimum of 30 minutes of instruction)
8. Interview with the Graduate Coordinator
   1. What is your philosophy of music education?
   2. What is your greatest strength in the classroom?
   3. How do you hope to use the skills and knowledge gained from your MME to make your students better learners?
   4. Why do you want to attend Georgia College?
9. Admission to the Georgia College Master of Music Education program is determined as a result of a comprehensive file review process involving a number of review criteria.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who apply too late for full consideration for admission or who have not submitted all required documents for evaluation may be assigned conditional admission status. While in this status, a student may register for one semester only by completing a Georgia College Conditional Registration Agreement for Graduate Students; this form requires the signatures of both the student and the graduate coordinator. Any student who registers under this agreement must be admitted either to regular or to provisional status by the end of the first semester of enrollment in order to continue taking courses in the degree program. Students may take no more than 12 semester hours of graduate course work in conditional admission.

Academic Dismissal

If a student’s institutional grade point average remains below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student will fail to meet the requirements for progression and will be dismissed from the program.

Non-Degree Certification Information

Non-Degree Certification progression to Master of Music Education

Non-degree certification students:

1. May apply for admission to the MME program and begin taking graduate classes (9 hours maximum) during the semester immediately prior to student teaching as non-degree certification student.
2. May be admitted to the MME program under Provisional Status before or during the semester of student teaching with stipulations of successful student teaching (pass).
3. After successful student teaching and certification completed, may begin taking curriculum classes in the MME program with Regular Admission.

Advisement

The general advisor of all students in the Master of Music Education program is the Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music Education.
