MAED 6010 Math Investigations Num/Oprat

This course is required for all Early Childhood Teachers who seek the K-5 Mathematics Endorsement. In addition, this course may satisfy requirements for students in the MAT and EDS programs. It is designed to expose teachers to a variety of problem solving strategies to foster their in-depth understanding of numbers and operations, cross-disciplinary thinking, number sense, knowledge on how children develop number sense, and ability to communicate appropriately. This course begins with pre-number concepts and moves through place value and multiplicative relationships, providing candidates with a strong foundation of the base 10 system, conceptual understanding of many commonly used mathematical algorithms, an analysis of students' invented strategies, and a conceptual understanding of fractions and operations with fractions. Application of their mathematical understanding will be assessed within the context of authentic residency.

3

MAED 6020 Data Analy Prob Alg-Teachers

This course is required for all Early Childhood Teachers who seek the K-5 Mathematics Endorsement. In addition, this course may satisfy requirements for students in the MAT and EDS programs. This course will concentrate on solving problems related to the study of algebra, data analysis, and probability. Students will engage in systematically collecting, organizing, describing, and analyzing data using surveys, tables, charts, and graphs; making valid inferences, decisions, and arguments based on data; and using counting techniques, experimental probability, or theoretical probability as appropriate to represent and solve problems involving uncertainty. In addition, generalizations from arithmetic and from patterns in all of mathematics, meaningful use of symbols, structure in the number system, functions, mathematical modeling, and topics in number theory will be explored and developed through algebraic reasoning.

3

MAED 6040 Geometry for Teachers

Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. This course is designed for students who teach at the elementary school level. This focuses on an intuitive development of geometric ideas including point set Euclidean geometry, measurement, and transformational geometry. A student may not receive credit for both MAED 5510 and MAED 6040.
